Nature Shadow Box

Cigar box shadowbox

It’s the season of egg decorations, so why not make one you can display all year long?

An old cigar box is the perfect frame for an illustration and a few bits of nature. I left room to expand our collection, and we’ve since enjoyed adding another shell and several interesting feathers from our trips!

Feathers and eggshells

Supplies:
Cigar box
Silver binder clip
Vintage illustration or other print
Small found objects, like shells or feathers

1. Remove the lid from a cigar box.

2. Use hot glue to attach a binder clip to the inside of the box, and use that to “hang” an illustration. (For a great selection of free images, check vintageprintable.com.)

3. Set the egg shells and feathers where you like them and added a tiny bit of rubber cement to secure them. Rubber cement isn’t permanent, so you can pull them out without doing any damage and rearrange them if need be.

4. If you’d like to hang your shadow box, use hot glue to attach a sawtooth picture hanger. (The wood of a cigar box is too thin to nail into — the usual way of attaching the hardware.)

It’s easy to make different boxes with different themes! I made a bee shadow box with a bit of honeycomb and a bee print, and I’m working on a sea shell one, too!
