Memorial Day is one of our country’s many food-themed holidays — BBQs and American fare (in addition to flags and pools) are celebration musts! I don’t have any burger or watermelon stories to share, but I did make something unconventionally American. My friend Jill and I combined chocolate chip cookies (America’s favorite homemade cookies) with Oreos (America’s favorite store-bought cookies)!
Oh my goodness. They’re so good! And so fun to bite into. The recipe made about two dozen large cookies, and we each managed to eat just one! (Granted we’d been snacking on the dough and plain Oreos throughout the baking process).
The recipe comes from Picky Palate, and the process is pretty straightforward. Buy Oreos, make cookie dough, and smush the latter around the former. Though straightforward, it’s pretty sticky and kinda slow. I ended up washing and flouring my hands quite a few times. Our only modification: we used a full 12 ounce bag of chocolate chips instead of just the 10 ounces called for.
The cookies are big! They’re three in one, afterall.
Speaking of foods inside foods and American fare, we also celebrated Memorial Day with bacon-wrapped hot dogs in downtown LA. Yum!!
